We vertalen onze visie naar beeld en taal en maken een persoonlijk manifest. DESCRIPTION:When is costume? Talk & Q&A by Rachel Hann (UK)\nFrom August 3 to 16\, wearable sculpture artist Daphne Karstens is artist-in-residence at the Plein Theater Production house. During her residency\, she invites Rachel Hann – Associate Professor of Performance and Design at Northumbria University (Newcastle) – for a talk and Q&A on her research into costume within scenographic culture. \nWhen is costume? This presentation takes that question as a starting point to investigate how and when something becomes ‘costume’. Building on new materialist readings of assemblage (DeLanda) and performance theory (Schechner)\, it explores how costume-led performances draw attention to the role of the wearable in contemporary art and culture. \nRather than treating costume as a fixed category—from Halloween costumes to theatre and film dress—the presentation argues that costuming offers a way of investigating how appearance is felt\, performed\, and regulated. \nDrawing on case studies by artists and designers including Daphne Karstens and Sin Wai Kin\, it revisits the concepts of showing dressing (Hann\, 2019)\, gender-assemblages (Hann\, 2022)\, and costume scenographics (Hann\, 2023) to propose costuming as a unique way of exploring bodies caught in the act of appearance. DESCRIPTION:Giants & Toys\nDirected by Masumura Yasuzo\n95 minutes\nJapanese with English subtitles\n“Giants and Toys” (“Kyojin to Gangu” ) is a wild story of newly Americanized corporate post-war Japan\, and the hysterical drive for success at all costs. It is a tale as common now in Japan as it was in 1958\, and it is amazing to see how little the culture has changed in more than 60 years. In fact\, this bright\, colorful and fast paced film feels far more contemporary and ahead of its time than any Japanese films from the 70’s and 80’s. \nWhen three rival candy companies go to war for market supremacy\, all hell breaks loose. Nishi\, an advertising executive for the World Candy corporation\, finds a cute hillbilly girl called Kyoko on the streets with rotten teeth\, bad clothes and tadpoles as pets. Sensing she possesses some sort of weird otherworldly appeal\, he immediately thinks she would make a great model for their next campaign\, selling candy in a space suit. As she becomes more famous\, of course\, Kyoko develops a more independent streak and resents being manipulated by the World corporation. It is baffling that this satire of advertising\, capitalism and consumerism was made way back in 1958\, since it is totally unlike any other movie made in Japan at that time. \nWees aanwezig voor 20.15 uur om verzekerd te zijn van een zitplaats
