SUMMARY:Othered Bodies in het Plein Theater
DESCRIPTION:Othered Bodies (work-in-progress door Daphne Karstens)\nVan 3 t/m 15 augustus is wearable sculpture artist Daphne Karstens artist-in-residence in het Plein Theater Productiehuis.\nDaphne Karstens combineert ‘sculpture’ en kostuumontwerp om experimentele\, wearable sculptures (draagbare sculpturen)\, kostuums\, performances en installaties te creëren. \nHaar werk richt zich op het experimenteren met materialen\, vormen en structuren op en rond het lichaam. Ze werkt vaak met onconventionele materialen en combineert de specifieke eigenschappen daarvan met diverse vormen en structuren. Ze wil de grenzen en mogelijkheden van kostuums en wearable sculptures verkennen en opnieuw definiëren\, en laten zien wat er mogelijk is wanneer kostuums worden benaderd als meer dan slechts een kledingstuk. \nOthered Bodies \nIn haar residentie zal Daphne werken aan een beeldend onderzoek ‘Othered Bodies’\, dat de bestaande orde kritisch bekijkt. Sara Ahmeds ‘Queer Phenomenology’ dient als vertrekpunt voor de creatie van ‘wearable sculptures’ die een eigen narratief dragen. In lichamelijke en beeldende dialogen onderzoeken we wat ‘jezelf oriënteren’ eigenlijk betekent. Performers smelten samen met wearable sculptures op en om het lijf\, en creëren nieuwe (extra menselijke) beweging. Als ‘body assemblages’ laten ze zien dat ‘het lichaam’ niet enkelvoudig is maar steeds een momentane samenstelling – en daarmee representatie – van diverse systemen. Systemen met normen en grenzen die in Othered Bodies worden blootgelegd door een kanteling van perspectief. \nDit project is mede mogelijk gemaakt door een bijdrage van het Amarte Fonds en het Cultuurfonds en is onderdeel van het Plein Theater Productiehuis.\nKosten\n10\,- inclusief drankje

DESCRIPTION:When is costume? Talk & Q&A by Rachel Hann (UK)\nFrom August 3 to 16\, wearable sculpture artist Daphne Karstens is artist-in-residence at the Plein Theater Production house. During her residency\, she invites Rachel Hann – Associate Professor of Performance and Design at Northumbria University (Newcastle) – for a talk and Q&A on her research into costume within scenographic culture. \nWhen is costume? This presentation takes that question as a starting point to investigate how and when something becomes ‘costume’. Building on new materialist readings of assemblage (DeLanda) and performance theory (Schechner)\, it explores how costume-led performances draw attention to the role of the wearable in contemporary art and culture. \nRather than treating costume as a fixed category—from Halloween costumes to theatre and film dress—the presentation argues that costuming offers a way of investigating how appearance is felt\, performed\, and regulated. \nDrawing on case studies by artists and designers including Daphne Karstens and Sin Wai Kin\, it revisits the concepts of showing dressing (Hann\, 2019)\, gender-assemblages (Hann\, 2022)\, and costume scenographics (Hann\, 2023) to propose costuming as a unique way of exploring bodies caught in the act of appearance. DESCRIPTION:The Little Menace is a collaborative music and theatrical project by Lana van der Brug and Rein Postma\, who found each other in Amsterdam queer nightlife. The Little Menace brings a 1 hour live performance that mixes dark minimal soundscapes and (deconstructed) dance music with theatrical drag.\nIt showcases a non-binary persona driven by intense\, unfiltered emotions that are often suppressed in society. We need\, as a society\, to give more space to collectively feel and express our emotions. Taking inspiration from their own lives\, they find an outlet for the darker parts within themselves. Musically they like to play with the quiet\, the loud and the absurd. Their sounds reigns in between abstract moody soundscapes to deconstructed gabber.
